He began his career in the 1930s as a leading man, notably starring in Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion (1937) and The Rules of the Game (1939), before becoming known as in-demand character actor. His film career spanned nearly 200 productions released between 1931 and 1982, both in France and the United States.
